Formed in 1988, The Barely Works were one of the most successful bands on the Folk scene. They were voted Best Newcomer in the Folk Roots 1990 poll and received continued critical acclaim in the Folk press. The seven-piece outfit comprised of a hammer dulcimer, a fiddle, banjo, accordion, flute, trombone, and a saxophone. Their music was as mixed up as the array of instruments used - energetic, danceable and inventive songs taking influences from bluegrass, folk, ska, reggae, rock, pop, jazz, Latin, Celtic, Cajun, country, funk and African music.
The band made their live debut at the Cricketers pub at The Oval in London on November 30 1988, nobody threw tomatoes at them and the Barely Works were off and running. By the time they bowed out at York Arts Centre five years later they'd made three entirely fab 'n' groovy albums; 'Glow', 'The Big Beat' and 'Don't Mind Walking'; thrilled a million audiences; played to everyone from sedate supper houses to demonic headbangers and turned the traditional Geordie anthem 'Byker Hill' into a legend.
The Barely Works' sheer pace, energy and power gave them the appearance of "an anarchic, shambling good-time band" (The Gazette) but in fact "their off-beat image is underpinned with solid musicianship and a lot of hard work" (The List).
The band finished in 1993 when Alison decided that she wanted to spend more time with her family and the others
