The idea to fuse these sounds together came late one night after a gig whilst Holmstrom was listening to electronic dance music in a friend's car. "He was playing all this music I had never heard before," Holmstrom explains, "like St. Germain, Fatboy Slim, and Moby. I realized they were just sampling John Lee Hooker and Alan Lomax field recordings and putting beats over it. It made me think that I could do the same thing but in reverse - record the classic blues and R&B music I've always played but put breakbeats and samples over it." Holmstrom enlisted the very special help of innovative sound producer/mixer Rob Schnapf whose prior project roster includes forward-thinking, on-the-cusp artists like Beck, R.L. Burnside, Elliot Smith and the Foo Fighters. With Schnapf at the nobs, Holmstrom's music comes alive with an eclectic and exciting vitality. Holmstrom grew up in Fairbank Alaska. His father was a DJ at one of the local radio stations and regularly played his son the original blues recordings transmogrified by the day's most popular rock bands - the Beatles, the Stone and Lep Zepplin. By the age of 11, Holmstrom had already begun to play the guitar but his life was transformed when his father took him to see rock 'n' roll icon Chuck Berry play. "He was on fire," Holmstrom says. "I measure every show against that one amazing performance." After graduation, Holmstrom moved to LA and fully immersed himself in what remained of the legendary Central Avenue jazz and blues scene. Spending untold hours 'just watching' in clubs like the Pure Pleasure lounge, the Pioneer Club and Babe & Rick's, Holmstrom mustered up courage to sit in on a jam session. Soon he had befriended local blues legends Smokey Wilson, William Clarke and Junior Watson. By 1988, the now-late Clarke asked Holmstrom to join his band where he stayed for close to three years. By the early 90's Holmstrom's guitar prowess led to him backing several famous bluesmen including Billy Boy Arnold, Snooky Pryor and Big Daddy Kinsey, amongst others. Holmstrom also recorded, produced and wrote two critically acclaimed albums with Johnny Dyer, a legendary Mississippi born harmonica player and singer who grew up on the same Mississippi plantation as blues legend Muddy Waters. In 1995, Rod Piazza & The Mighty Flyers, enlisted Holmstrom's guitar services. Holmstrom has gone on to play and co-produce three albums with Piazza, and the band has won three W.C. Handy Best Blues Band of The Year Awards.
