Chuck Prophet was born in Whittier, California. Barely out of his teens and living in San Francisco, he joined psychedelic- roots-cowboys Green On Red in the early '80s; their brand of Americana echoes in the music of today's No Depression / insurgent country combos--from Kelly Willis to Wilco and beyond. Eight albums in as many years and Green On Red disintegrated.

Prophet's solo career dates back to his 1990 debut Brother Aldo-recorded on a whim for $800.00. I think that's what it cost, or maybe I read that somewhere, he says. Green On Red was in escrow of sorts. I'd been kicking those songs around on stage with Stephanie Finch in the growing underground scene (or ghetto) here in town that included American Music Club, Penelope Houston, Steve Yerkey, Bone Cootes and others. We hijacked the back room of our favorite watering hole for some acoustic gigs and after a while, I just wanted to get those songs out of my head so I demoed them. When the people at Fire Records heard it, they wanted to release it 'as is;' and so they did. Melody Maker called it, 'as close to the genuine article as a white boy can get.' Somewhere along the way, I made peace with my nasally, nicotine-stained voice and continued making records, says Prophet.

His next two albums, Balinese Dancer (described by Select as, The best of this whole wracked-out, country-rock genre since Gram Parsons--and that's no hyperbole), and Feast of Hearts further enhanced Prophet's rep as a songwriter/singer/ guitarist (in no particular order) to be reckoned with. Q Magazine dubbed Chuck the missing link between Paul Westerberg and Bob Dylan. His last album, 1997's Homemade Blood, brought Prophet back to basics. It was a stripped-down affair and found itself the subject of rare praise. MOJO said it was essential listening for fans of Americana. Homemade Blood sat high and proud at number one for months on end in the German Rolling Stone critics' poll.

In 2001 Prophet released his first live album, Turn the Pigeons Loose (COOK CD 215). Recorded in 2000 at two different gigs, Turn the Pigeons Loose features tracks from 1999's acclaimed The Hurting Business, with backing from The Mission Express; Stephanie Finch (singing, Farfisa, String Ensemble, Wurlitzer guitar), Teenage Rob Douglas: (Fender bass guitar), Paulo Revelli (drums, Chicquitas, singing) and Max Butler (guitar, pedal steel, mando-guitar, singing).
